A Separate Peace #6 10 Favorite Phrases/Sentences

1. “So the more things remain the same, the more they change after all–plus c’est la même chose, plus ça change.” (p. 14)

Gene cites this phrase in the beginning, where he is 15 years past the time of his story. The quote is particular in  the fact that, with a glance at the real world, it indeed proves to be true. Nothing seems to endure the degrading acid of time. Love does not last permanently, either faded by time or by bitterness. Memories do not last, being the substance of those who live a century and die longing for life. As for material substances, such as the tree, they do not last long due to the many forces which pass through and leave their own mark.

2. “It was only long after that I recognized sarcasm as the protest of people who are weak.” (p. 29)

Gene recognizes sarcasm as the defense mechanism for the weak, even though he himself is riddled with it. Those who cannot face the problem directly often stoop to avoiding it, using sarcasm as the back door to their situations. Many people use it in their everyday life, and what I can’t help but think is: if sarcasm is the tool of the weak, what does that make the human race?

3. “If I had fallen awkwardly enough I could have been killed. Finny had practically saved my life.” (p. 32)

This quote is interesting in the fact that Gene is rescued by Finny when he is about to tumble to the ground, and the tables are turned when Gene causes his “best-friend” to fall from the tree instead. If Phineas had not been true at heart, Gene would have suffered the fate he delivered to someone else, or worse. Many people in today’s era focus primarily on themselves, not thinking about the consequences their actions could deliver to others. Why should others have to suffer for the choices of a few who hold bitterness brought by their own problems?

4. “Everyone has a moment in history which belongs particularly to him.” (p. 40)

When Gene said this phrase I thought about the strong points of Gene’s life as well as mine, and I realize that the quote is quite true, describing every person who lives and breaths. Moments in an individual’s life may seem important, where nothing could wipe clean the event or shroud the emotions expressed at that current time. This is the defining moment of that character’s life, and ultimately describes the person who is participating. This moment could be a birth, death, exciting moment, or a time of mourning, and requires only that the person of interest must always remember it.

5. “It was all cold trickery, it was all calculated, it was all enmity.” (p. 53)

This stone-cold realization that Gene’s friendship is nothing but a sham forces him to become the monster he is describing. Many people try to blame matters on everyone around them, but the truth is that what they try to escape is their own cruelty, their own devices. This is the case with Gene, for he blames Phineas of being deceitful where there is none at all. Instead the result is that Gene pretends to be friendly and then knocks him out of the tree, ruining his life forever.

6. “Now I knew  that there never was and never could be any rivalry between us. I was not of the same quality as he.” (p. 59)

Everyone experiences a feeling in their life where they realize they can’t measure up to something or someone. With Gene he realizes it when he finds the complete innocence Phineas radiates, and somehow this realization that he can never measure up caused the poor boy to snap. With an unthinking sureness he jostled the branch and doomed his best friend to pain and suffering for the rest of his life. Small matters such as this begin in the heart and spread to the mind. When they corrupt a person altogether, a nasty sporadic behavior may occur, usually not boding well for anyone in the vicinity.

7. “I fought that battle, that first skirmish of a long campaign, for Finny.” (p. 79)

This is a self-justification for the actions of a boy unable to free himself from an exposed position of weakness, and so he lashes out like a cornered animal. I can relate to this feeling of desperation, where anything can be a savior and anything can be the executioner. So many people fall dead or injured due to the self-justifications that “I’m doing this for my father, I’m killing him for my mother, or I’m jumping off the roof because of the bottle.” Why doesn’t the world drop the justification process and embrace the innocence that Phineas radiates? How could the world prevent people like Gene from becoming desperate at all?

8. “Just like a stag at eve,” Brinker roared back. “It was a winter wonderland, every minute” (p. 100)

This line is lathered with sarcasm, and every time my eyes read over it I cant help but smile. Brinker is the friend everyone wishes they had in their life, being comedic and entertaining to keep life interesting. However, this response is not made for attention but out of outrage. After working hard all day and being confronted with a naturalist who doesn’t seem to care about the labors of others, Brinker seems to lose his cool. The quote is simply ironic because while Brinker and the other guys labor in their “winter wonderland,” Leper is sightseeing in one.

9. “What is all this crap about no maids?” (p. 104)

This quote originates first from when Finny returns to Devon and catches how his bed isn’t made for him. The irony in this statement is highlighted by Gene when he brings forth the fact that men and women are dieing in a war, and Phineas is worrying about maids fixing his bed. However, the boy simply shrugs the remark off and continues to ignore the war as if it were nothing but a fly to be reckoned with. Amazingly, there are people just like Finny who believe that war is a sham, and will continue to believe this until their grave, or until war overtakes them.

10. “I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case.” (p. 194)

When you die, can you see the assembled who come to weep and mourn over your body? Can you weep and mourn with them? No one on earth knows what death feels like, or what it holds, and so they cannot say whether you can weep or laugh when you leave your body. To be literal, Gene knows that Phineas would never laugh again, and he would never cry or speak out ever again. This pains him so much that as he believes himself an extension of Phineas, without the sorrow of his counterpart there would be no sorrow on his end either. Just as Phineas dies with high spirits and a light heart, so shall Gene live.

A Separate Peace #5 Major Change(s) in the Main Character(s)

Brinker Hadley is a character of much interest in this progressing story. Just as A Separate Piece develops from page to page, so does this complex individual. The son of a military officer, Brinker is cared for and fed only the best, creating the perfect child who is engaged in every activity and every conversation. He is what you could call, the “life of the party,” being naturally liked by everyone and smooth with how he can control the mood of the atmosphere. For example, Brinker could instantly improve the mood of the area by cracking a joke, or instead dampen everyone’s spirits by snarling out a brutal remark. However, this perfect boy is changed drastically after Gene refuses to enlist with him, wearing tattered jeans and boots to replace his exemplary dress clothes. Brinker falls into a depressed state of shock, withdrawing from all of his unnecessary activities and using his social power for different reasons. Before the change he simply joked with Gene about the accident, but changed he is a different boy altogether. He drags both Phineas and Gene to the First Building and questions them about the day of the accident. If Brinker can’t enlist with Gene then he isn’t going to let him waste his life with Finny. Whether Brinker forces the truth to come out of hatred, or out of guidance for Gene, he still lacks the qualities to sympathize with others. Instead of helping Phineas to become more than a burden to Gene, he opts for the brutal path and separates the two with the truth: Gene intentionally caused Finny to fall. Brinker changes from the innocent boy bent on impressing everyone around him, becoming a boy warped with bitterness, destined to ditch everything he inspired to be.

A Separate Peace #4 Ideas About the Main Character

Gene Forrestor is the main protagonist in this truly tragic novel, being complex and constantly ravaged with change. The story begins with Gene being young, innocent, and ambitious, without any misgivings for his actions or paranoia for his past. However, as young Forrestor advances through the end of his high school life he is damaged by contact to a brutality, a force that introduces pain, misery, and death. This force could be none other than the war. The war brings many things into Gene’s life, such as an ambition that drives him to be better than all of the “rich students” who attend. Unlike Brinker or Leper, Gene has no important background to rely on, and must utilize his own talents to create a future for himself. Of course, the boy refuses to divulge his origin to anyone…”anyone” who could use it against him and discriminate. In his eyes this could be any person around him, even his best friend Phineas, because if he doesn’t trust anyone else, how could they trust him?

Gene Forrestor is merely a boy with no regal background, looking for a purpose and a friend without the correct ambition to earn one. He has trust, but simply chooses not to use it in the chance he will be betrayed. This complex teenager indeed finds a separate peace, though not through his quiet ambition but by the reckless brutality inside him, the boy destined for greatness but understood as insignificant and weak.

 

A Separate Peace #3 Setting and Genre

A Separate Peace is a realistic work of fiction based upon a time in World War II, where the war does not exist beyond the horrors which creep within the everyday newspaper. Devon is no special case, being isolated from the war, far across the world in New Hampshire. The author introduces elements in the novel which create an atmosphere that depicts the average boarding school, allowing the reader to vividly imagine these events occurring while a war ravaged Europe. For example: while thousands of Europeans die for their country, why couldn’t two teenage boys who live across the world be in total denial? The trip to the beach is presented as a real life situation that could occur within any community, and due to such realism there must also be death. Why should death be a part of life? In present life citizens and victims die everyday to empty a slot for the next candidate. Though seemingly cruel, death is the ruling judge of life, sentencing some to the grave and others freedom to live. A Separate Peace never occurred during World War II, and thus the work is considered fiction. However, death and ruling life are what categorize this heart-warming piece as quite real. Gene and Finny form a bond where none should have ever existed, and from there the life of these two individuals becomes seemingly spontaneous, alive in a boarding school preparing its students to die.

A Separate Peace #2 Significance of the Title

The isolated campus of Devon is free of war, and where war is not in attendance peace must have presence. A separate peace is a serene environment or object of interest in which an individual places his trust, confiding his most precious secrets or daring achievements. However, whenever someone truly finds their “separate peace,” they lock a part of their heart into this item or area of choice. In the novel, A Separate Peace, the author places young Gene Forrester into the shoes of a most troubled protagonist. This young man becomes friends with the darning athlete, Phineas, forming a bond that lasts until Gene unfortunately has to attend the funeral of his best friend. Gene and Phineas both place immense trust in each other, which is risky for teens being raised in a military school during this time. Devon is separate from the war, just as Finny is separate from all traits negative in nature. Gene places part of his heart–metaphorically– into Finny, and thus when the boy dies he loses his own identity. He is no longer the “companion of Phineas” or the delinquent who shadows the mastermind of every broken rule, but instead is perceived as only Gene.

A Separate Peace can be taken in two completely different perspectives. Through the eyes of an optimist “a separate peace” is the peace found in the small matters of life, especially when hardships continue to endure and antagonize. However, with the eyes of a realist the title signifies the truth that is illuminated throughout the story: Gene places a trust in Phineas that could never last, and thus whenever he loses his friend the world goes dark and he no longer flows through life, but is clouded with mud and dirt, one and the same with the Naguamsett.

I enjoyed creating the Por y Para glog because it was an easy way to display the information that we were required to provide. The themes and many objects were limited, restricting me to more colorful ideas to set up my glog. However, it was easy to access all of the tools at my disposal and set them up effectively to create an interesting project. The page was a bit small and limited my ability to space out all of my data according to how it should be formatted. Other than these small difficulties the project was a luxury to create, not being too hard or too easy.

         A Ian Stowe le gusta sacar buenas notas a menudo. Tambien, le gusta jugar al fútbol cada día. Le gusta comer mucha comida los fin de semana. Le encanta dormir tarde durante el vierno.  A Ian Stowe le importar ver la tele.

Mis Gustos

The “Mis Gustos” project that was given to us developed my understanding of how to use several like and dislike sentences in Spanish. At first I perceived that most all types were the same, much like English in fact, but soon found that there were various forms that needed to be implemented. For example, the phrases of clarification used to identify what people like or dislike can be complicated. In the end the project ended up helping me understand the lesson that was given previously. The way we had to memorize and repeat the assignment assured that we had to know a bit about what we were doing, which helped more than a simple lesson could ever do.
